SAF Overseas Incident - Update 1

A team of five SAF doctors left for Taiwan this afternoon. They will be working with the Taiwanese medical authorities to stabilise the two SAF servicemen warded in the Intensive Care Units of Taipei Tri-service Hospital so that they can be brought back to Singapore as soon as it is medically advisable to do so.

The two servicemen who died in the incident have been identified as Corporal (CPL) Isz Sazli Bin Sapari, 19 and Private (PTE) Fan Yao Jin, 23. Their next of kin have been informed. MINDEF and the SAF extend their deepest condolences to the families of the late CPL Isz Sazli and PTE Fan, and will be assisting the families in their time of grief.

MINDEF has made arrangements for the next of kin of the affected SAF personnel to be flown to Taiwan. They will be accompanied by family-liaison officers and counsellors from the SAF.

MINDEF and the SAF will continue to work with the Taiwanese authorities to provide support and assistance to the affected servicemen and their families.

SAF Overseas Incident - Update 2

The remains of the late 3rd Sergeant (3SG) Isz Sazli Bin Sapari were brought back to Singapore by a RSAF C-130 aircraft at 3:15 pm today. He will be accorded a full military funeral at the Pusara Abadi Cemetery in Lim Chu Kang this evening at 5:15 pm.

Separately, arrangements are underway to transport the remains of the late Private (PTE) Fan Yao Jin back to Singapore tomorrow after the completion of religious rites as requested by his family. The late PTE Fan will also be accorded a full military funeral.

MINDEF and the SAF are continuing to render assistance and support to the families of the late 3SG Isz and PTE Fan.

SAF Overseas Incident - Update 3

The two SAF servicemen warded overnight at the Intensive Care Unit of the Taipei Tri-service Hospital were flown back to Singapore this evening. They are now warded in Singapore General Hospital, where they will continue to receive treatment for their burns and injuries.

The two Full-time National Servicemen, 3rd Sergeant (3SG) Ramakrishnan Karthigayan, 23 and Lance Corporal (LCP) Chow Han Min, Calvin, 19 were brought back to Singapore by a RSAF KC-135 aircraft specially equipped for medical evacuation. The aircraft arrived at Changi Air Base at 5:28 pm. Members of the SAF medical team, including a burns specialist and a medical aviation expert, augmented by specialist staff and life support systems from Alexandra Hospital, Tan Tock Seng Hospital and the National University Hospital, were on board the aircraft to monitor the condition of the two soldiers throughout the flight.

Minister for Defence Mr Teo Chee Hean visited both servicemen at the hospital this evening. Minister Teo also met with the relatives of the servicemen to assure them of MINDEF's and the SAF's support during this difficult time.

SAF Overseas Incident - Update 4

The remains of the late Private (PTE) Fan Yao Jin were brought back to Singapore at 11:18 am today.

The funeral will be held at the Bright Hill Crematorium on 15 May 2007. The late PTE Fan will be accorded a full military funeral.

MINDEF and the SAF are continuing to render assistance and support to the family of the late PTE Fan.

SAF Overseas Incident - Update 5

Full-time National Serviceman Lance Corporal (LCP) Chow Han Min Calvin, 19, who was air-lifted back to Singapore from Taiwan on 12 May 07, passed away in Singapore General Hospital (SGH) at 6:37 am after his condition took a turn for the worse early this morning. He had suffered severe burn injuries after a Taiwanese F-5F aircraft had crashed into a Taiwanese storehouse where he was, on 11 May 07.

The other injured serviceman 3rd Sergeant (3SG) Ramakrishnan Karthigayan, is in a critical but stable condition at the Intensive Care Unit of SGH.

Minister for Defence Teo Chee Hean expresses his deepest condolences to the family of the late LCP Chow. MINDEF and the SAF will continue to assist the family in their time of loss.
